Mountain photo session in Switzerland – what to expect and how to prepare

A photo session in the Swiss Alps isn’t just about pretty views. It’s about natural light, fresh air, and capturing something honest and personal. If you’re wondering what such a session really looks like – this post will answer your questions and help you prepare.

That is a Mountain photo session, really?

This is not about snapping a few selfies at a scenic viewpoint.
A mountain session is more like a relaxed little adventure – with time to enjoy the landscape and focus on real moments.

Depending on the package, your session might:
• last 30-60 minutes and take place close to a cable car station (great for MINI sessions),
• or involve a gentle walk along one of the alpine trails (for Half Day Escape or Adventure Day).

Just to be clear: I don’t plan sessions on steep, technical or exposed routes – I don’t do those myself. I walk at my own pace, and I want the experience to be enjoyable for everyone, not a workout.
If we need to pause for a snack, water or breath – no problem. The session adapts to you, not the other way around.

What to wear for a mountain shoot?

Whether you’re planning a 20-minute walk or a half-day loop, it’s worth packing for the alpine conditions. I recommend:

  • Comfortable shoes with good grip (low-heeled or flat)
    • A warm layer or light jacket – even in summer it can get windy or cooler than expected
    • Layered clothes so you can adjust to the weather
    • If we’re using a cable car – a change of clothes, which you can switch into at the top (most stations have restrooms)

When it comes to colours, white and grey always work well. So do soft greens, warm neutrals, earth tones and pastels. If you’re unsure – I’ll be happy to help you choose something that fits both you and the location.

Why mountain photos feel different?

  • The light – clearer air at altitude gives softer, more flattering light even during daytime
  • The space – you can feel it in the images; the background doesn’t overwhelm, it frames you.
  • The movement – wind in your hair, walking through a field, clothing in motion – nothing staged, nothing stiff.

If you’re looking for portraits that are natural but a bit special – mountain photos might be exactly the thing.

What to expect (and prepare for)

  1. Changing weather – it can shift quickly up here, so a jacket is always a good idea
  2. Wind and hair – loose hair looks great in motion, while carefully pinned hairstyles might not survive the breeze
  3. Schedule flexibility – best not to squeeze the session between four other activities – give yourself a quiet window

Famous locations – peaks like Titlis, Säntis or Pilatus are stunning, but they also mean crowds, concrete paths and railings
If you’d prefer something quieter and more natural – I know places where there’s no one around but cows (and sometimes a curious marmot)

What about sunrise or sunset?

Golden hour light in the mountains can be beautiful – but there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Some valleys lose sunlight quickly due to their shape and depth
    • Many cable cars stop operating before sunset

If you’re dreaming of those golden tones, we’ll pick a location that actually works for that time of day. I know a few that do – and I’ll gladly guide you.
